Weltreise 2014: Rotorua, 17th of February 2014

Leider (oder zum Glück) gibt es in diesem aussergewöhnlichen Land noch so viel zu entdecken, so dass wir bereits gegen 09.00 Uhr in Richtung Rotorua aufgebrochen sind und damit unseren First Class Stellplatz (Island View Family Holiday Park) aufgegeben haben. Rotorua bildet das Zentrum von Neuseelands aktivstem geothermischen Gebiet. Kein Wunder also, dass man hier Geysire, brodelnde Schlammlöcher und einen starken Geruch nach Schwefel vorfindet. Von alledem unbeeindruckt erklommen wir zunächst einmal den Mount Ngongotaha (757m hoch) – allerdings per Gondel J. Von oben hat man einen herrlichen Blick auf die Stadt und kann sich auf 3 Pisten (unterschiedlichen Schwierigkeitsgrades) mit Karts in die Tiefe stürzen. Janis und Neyla waren derart begeistert, dass wir uns dieses Vergnügen 3 mal gönnten. Einen Gewinner gab es familienintern nichtJ. (Skyline Rotorua ist für Gross und Klein eine tolle Abwechslung). Dananch folgten wir einfach dem Geruch des Schwefels und landeten im Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland. Das Waiotapu Thermalgebiet erstreckt sich insgesamt über eine Strecke von 16 Quadratkilometern, davon können nur rund 3 km begangen werden. Wir hatten uns entschieden auf die letzte Rundschlaufe zu verzichten und haben daher nur 2 km zurückgelegt. Das Interesse der Kinder an der stinkenden und brodelnden Thermalfläche hielt sich einfach in Grenzen. Wie sagte Neyla so schön: „Dad Dad, das stinkt“. Dennoch eine spannende Umgebung, die so ein bisschen an Planeten ferner Galaxien erinnert. Zum Abschluss des Tages genehmigten wir uns dann noch ein gutes Steak bei Mac’s Steaks, einem Restaurant, das anscheinend jedes Jahr für sein Beef und Lamm ausgezeichnet wird. Wir würden für die Qualität keinen Preis vergeben, waren aber dennoch happy mal wieder ordentlich Fleisch gespeist zu haben. Schwefel macht müde – Gute Nacht und bis morgen.

Unfortunately, (or maybe we should say fortunately) there is still so much to see in this country that we left our camping site at 9am already to drive direction Rotorua and therefore left our first class camping site (Island View Familiy Holiday Park) pretty early. Rotorua is the center of New Zealand’s most active geothermal area. No wonder you find plenty of gushing spring and sizzling mud holes with a strong smell of sulphur. Unimpressed by all this we first got on top of the hill of Mount Ngongotaha (757m high), but this time in a gondola. J From there you have a wonderful view on the city and you can rush down in karts on three different tracts of diverse degree of difficulty. Janis and Neyla were so excited that we did this descent 3 times. We did not choose a family winner this timeJ. Skyline Rotorua is great fun for every age class. After that we just followed the smell of sulphur and reached Wai-o-tapu Thermal Wonderland. The Waiotapu thermal area extends a distance of 16 km square, but you can only walk-on 3km. We did decide to refrain from the last round-tour and did only 2km. The interest of the kids in the stinking and sizzling thermal area was pretty low. As Neyla states pretty clearly: Dad Dad, that stinks! Anyhow, it was still an interesting experience and you had a little bit the feeling of being in a different galaxy... At the end of the day we did go for a steak at Mac’s Steaks, a restaurant which has become famous for its best beef and lamb. We would not really confirm the award, but we were still happy to have had a good piece of meet... sulphur makes you really tired. Good night and till tomorrow.
