Weltreise 2014: Redwoods and Hobbiton 18th of February, 2014

Nicht überraschend hat gestern unsere Internet Prepaid Karte mit 2 Gigabyte zur Erstellung der täglichen Blogs ihren Geist aufgegeben bzw.ihre Grenze erreicht. Wahnsinn J - also haben wir für die restlichen 14 Tage (die es leider nur noch sind) nochmal 3 GB nachgelegt (bei der steigenden Anzahl Bilder, die wir mittlerweile einstellen, absolut notwendig). Schön, dass so viele Freunde auf unsere Blogs warten und sich über die Berichte und Bilder freuen - DANKE. Wir haben unterdessen 2100 Bilder geschossen, rund 3000 km zurückgelegt und knapp 3000 Zugriffe auf unseren Blog. Nach einem Cheeseburger bei McD (Janis forderte diesen um 10.30 Uhr ein?!?) brachen wir zum „Whakarewarewa Forest“ auf; dieser liegt quasi vor der Haustür Rotoruas und ist durch seine kalifornischen Redwood Bäume ein begehrtes Touristenziel. Auf 5600 Hektar kann man hier zu Fuss, mit dem Bike oder Pferd Wanderungen von 30 min bis 8 h zurücklegen. Hat man den Wald erst einmal betreten inhaliert man bereits nach wenigen Sekunden reine, gesunde Luft (eine tolle Abwechslung zum Schwefelgeruch, den man sonst in Rotorua penetrant in der Nase hat). Highlight sind natürlich die Redwood Bäume, die 60 m hoch werden und deren Stammumfang gewaltig ist (die Rinde fühlt sich erstaunlich weich an). Janis und Neyla nutzen die Bäume als Tore für den mitgenommen Ball – solche Pfosten sind doch einmalig J. Wir blieben zwar nur rund 1 Stunde, legten beim „Ball-Nachrennen“ aber eine gehörige Distanz zurück und nahmen viel positive Energie mit. Janis meinte nach der Rückkehr am Wohnmobil (Sekunden vor dem Einschlafen), dass er „schwitzig“ sei. Beim Aufwachen der Kids hatten wir bereits das 80 km entfernte Matamata erreicht. Hierhin hatte es uns verschlagen, weil wir es uns nicht entgehen lassen wollten die Kulisse aus „Herr der Ringe“ bzw. „Der Hobbit“ anzuschauen. (Beide Filme wurden zwar an rund 150 unterschiedlichen Orten Neuseelands gedreht – mit Hobbiton gibt es aber nur ein Filmset, das Bestand hat). Die knapp 2 stündige Tour war den Preis von 75 NZD pro Person wirklich wert (zumal am Ende der Tour sogar noch ein Bier im Preis inbegriffen war J) Fazit: 1) die Liebe zum Detail ist gewaltig 2) Domi’s Interesse an den Filmen wurde geweckt und 3) die süssesten Hobbits sind Janis und Neyla. Für die Fans dieser Filme ein MUSS. Mit tollen Eindrücken fuhren wir dann noch nach Mount Manunganui, wo wir morgen in die „Hot Pools“ hüpfen und vielleicht den gleichnamigen Berg besteigen werden. Seid also gespannt.

It’s not surprising our prepaid card for the internet run down with its 2GB this morning, after sending out our daily blogs with an increasing number of pictures... Crazy... so we had to top it up for the last 2 weeks with another 3 GB (which we will probably need...) It’s so wonderful to see how much joy we give you all with our blogs and so many of you are literally waiting for the next comments and pictures... THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS! We have taken more than 2100 pictures so far, covered a distance of 3000 km and just about 3000 accesses on our blog. After a cheeseburger at Mc Donald’s (which Janis asked for at 10:30 am?!) we set out for „Whakarewarewa Forest“. It is located just before Rotorua and has become a very famous tourist attraction due to its Californian Redwood trees. You can make hiking tours here from 30 minutes to 8 hours, go biking or go on a horse ride on a district of over 5600 hectares. As soon as you enter the forest, you can immediately breathe in the fresh and healthy air which is a great change after the permanent sulphur odor you have constantly in your nose around Rotorua. The Redwood trees which reach a height of 60 m and which circumference is very impressing are the absolute highlight. The bark feels surprisingly soft. Janis and Neyla abused the trees as a goal for the ball they had taken with them. Such poles are just perfect for this. J We stayed only an hour but due to the “running after the ball” we still covered a quite impressive distance and took a lot of good energy with us. Janis meant he was a little “sweaty” when we got back to the car. The kids fell immediately asleep and so we had a relaxing drive to Matamata, which is roughly 80 km away from Rotorua. We did not want to miss out this place, as the movies “Lord of the rings” and “Hobbit” was produced here. Around 150 different places in New Zealand were used as settings for both films, but “Hobbiton” is the only real film set to endure. The 2-hours trip for 75 NZD were absolute worth the price, considering they even offered you a nice cold beer at the end of the tour. Conclusion: 1) the eye to detail is enormous 2) Domi actually got an interest to watch the movie one day 3) the sweetest hobbits are Janis and Neyla An absolute MUST for every fan. With great impressions we then drove to Mount Manunganui, where we will jump into the “Hot Pools” tomorrow, and if we feel like it, climb the mountain of the same name. You will see.
