Whangaroa, St. Pauls Rock, Karikari peninsula, 27th of February 2014

Nach ein paar Regenschauern am frühen Morgen gestaltete sich der Tag wieder durchgängig sonnig. Neyla bezahlte ihren unbändigen Mut und Dinge alleine absolvieren zu wollen noch vor unserer Abfahrt mit einem blauen Augen, als sie von der Treppe zur Rutsche stürzte. Sie schüttelte sich dreimal, warf mit Dad Dad ein paar „Tones“ (Steine) und alles war vergessen J. Auf unserem Weg in Richtung Cape Reinga machten wir heute zunächst einmal Station in Whangaroa.  Da uns in Neuseeland der Wandervirus befallen hat trieb es uns auf St. Pauls Rock, einen Felsen, der ein Überbleibsel eines Vulkanausbruches vor 20 Millionen Jahren ist, und einen fantastischen 360 Grad Rund-um- Blick bietet. Die Steilheit und Länge des Weges entspricht rund 700 Treppenstufen. Allerdings starteten wir im Gegensatz zu den anderen Touristen am Hafen und hatten daher noch einige Höhenmeter mehr zu absolvieren. Die Aussicht auf diesem Track ist einfach gewaltig. So legten wir kurz unter dem Gipfel noch eine Pause ein und genossen bei einem Obst-Snack den atemberaubenden Ausblick. Leider war es denn Kinder, trotz hervorragender Laufleistung, nicht gegönnt den Gipfel zu erklimmen, da der Berg kurz vor Schluss nur noch mit Seilhilfe zu meistern war. Dafür hatten wir bergab tierisch Freude, weil wir mehr hüpften als dass wir gingen. Von Whangaroa ging es dann nach Whatuwhiwhi und die Halbinsel Karikari. Auch diese gehört  zu den Top 100 Empfehlungen der Kiwis. Und ihr vermutet es wohl schon. Genau, auch der dortige Campingplatz verfügte über einen Spielplatz, auf dem Janis und Neyla sich vor dem Abendessen nochmal richtig austobten. Wir freuen uns bereits auf die kleine Entdeckungsreise der Halbinsel.

 

After a rain shower in the early morning the day turned pretty sunny later. As Neyla wanted to do everything by herself, as usual, she had to bear the consequences and accept a blue eye because she fell down the stairs going up to the slide... she shook her head a couple of times, through some stones – or as she would say – “tones” into the sea and everything was fine again. J On our way to Cape Reinga we made our first stop in Whangaroa. As we got the hiking bug here in New Zealand we climbed up the St. Pauls, a rock that represents the relict of a volcanic eruption 20 million years ago and which offers a fantastic view all around. The steepness and the lengths of the way correlate 700 steps of a staircase. We started our tour by the bay though, in opposition to all the other tourists and had a couple of altitude difference more to absolve than the others. The view on this is just breathtaking. So we stopped just before the summit for a little fruit break and enjoyed the fantastic view. Unfortunately it was not possible for the kids to reach the summit, not because they did not want to, but because the really end got too dangerous for them. In exchange they had a lot of fun on the way down, as they were more jumping than actually walking. From Whangaroa we then set off to Whatuwhiwhi and the peninsula Karikari. According to the Kiwis, this place is one of the top 100 must do’s. And you probably already know. The camping site there also had a great playground where the kids tired themselves out before dinner. We are already looking forward to the expedition of the peninsula.

Whangerei and Langs Beach, 26th of February 2014

Kia Ora – was in der Sprache der Maori “Hallo“ bedeutet. Wir haben das wilde Campen gut überstanden und nach einem ausgiebigen Frühstück gleich den ersten schönen Strand von Langs Beach angesteuert. Der 4 jährige Janis J schwamm dort mit seinem Schwimmring für wenige Sekunden erstmals im Meer; leider erwischte uns dann eine relativ grosse Welle, die seinen erlangten Mut schnell wieder zu Nichte machte. Stolz war er dennoch. Die Temperatur des Wassers war klasse und das Meer sehr sauber. Nach einer Runde Boccia (fragt nicht wer gewonnen hat) und dem Eingraben der Kinder bis zu den Hüften (beide konnten sich überraschenderweise aus eigener Kraft befreien) ging es anschliessend nach Whangerei. Hier hatten wir eigentlich sehr viel vor (Wanderung, Kauri Bäume, Wasserfall); irgendwie blieb es aber beim erneuten Aufladen des Internet Sticks (40 Bilder am Tag fressen die Bytes nur so auf J). So machten wir uns gegen 17.00 Uhr auf den Weg nach Paihia und damit an die Bay of Islands. Auf einem süssen Campingplatz in der Nähe eines Mangrovenwaldes und einem Stellplatz unmittelbar neben einem Spielplatz (ein weiteres nachträgliches Geburtstagsgeschenk) kochten wir lecker und verbrachten einen gemütlichen Abend am Wasser.

 

Kia Ora – that means „hello“ in the language of the Maori. We had a good night in the wild and head to the first beautiful beach of Langs Beach after a rich breakfast. The 4 year old Janis J swam for the first time all alone in the sea with his little turtle. Unfortunately a big wave hit us badly which quickly ruined his courage again. But he was proud of himself anyway. The temperature of the water was really good and the water clean. After a session of boccia (don’t ask who won) and carving the kids in the sand (both of them managed to rescue themselves, which was quite surprising) we made our way to Whangerei. We had planned quite a lot here (hiking, kauri trees, waterfall) but we just managed to fill up our internet stick (40 pictures a day quickly eat up our GB’s J) So we went direction Paihia at 5 pm and therewith to the Bay of Islands. On a cute little camping site close to a mangrove forest and right next to a playground we cooked a nice dinner and spent a cozy evening right by the water.
