Weltreise 2014: Bangkok, 8th of February, 2014

Wie nicht anders zu erwarten war Neyla um 3.00 Uhr (morgens!!) die erste der Familie, die das Hotel erkunden wollte. Sie schlief anschliessend immer mal wieder für Minuten ein, um 5.30 Uhr war dann aber, nachdem mittlerweile auch Janis wach geworden war, die Nacht definitiv zu Ende. Glücklicherweise machte um 6.00 Uhr der hauseigene Infinity Pool auf, den wir um diese Zeit, zusammen mit dem Sonnenaufgang, völlig für uns alleine hatten. Der Pool muss sich übrigens nicht hinter dem des Marina Bay Sands verstecken. Die neu geschaffene Möglichkeit des Fotografierens mit Stativ wurde prompt ausgenutzt und führte bei den Kindern zu wahren Begeisterungsstürmen. Dad Dad musste nach dem Auslösen des Selbstauslösers immer wieder hektisch ins Becken springen, um gerade noch rechtzeitig auf dem Bild zu sein – dies klappte mal mehr und mal weniger und wurde von den Kindern entsprechend gefeiert. Das anschliessende Frühstück kann man bewertungstechnisch mit Weltklasse bezeichnen. Von Nudelsuppe, Dim Sum bis zu frischem Obst wird hier alles geboten. Alle 4 machten davon reichlich Gebrauch. Jetzt konnte die Stadt kommen. Als exklusive Touristenführerin hatte sich freundlicherweise Shiva Farhadi bereit erklärt, die mit Ihrer Familie seit 3 Jahren in Bangkok lebt. Gerade in der politisch brisanten Situation war es für uns schon wahnsinnig beruhigend auf Shiva zurückgreifen zu können. Erster Anlaufpunkt war der der Grand Palace, der ehemalige Sitz der Könige. Diese Anlage besteht aus 100 Gebäuden und erstreckt sich über 2.6 qkm. Wir hatten bei der Besichtigung mit 2 Problemen zu kämpfen; der Hitze inkl. Luftfeuchtigkeit sowie den Menschenmassen. Nach dem ruhigen Neuseeland schon ein Kulturschock den riesigen Komplex mit hunderten geführten Gruppen von Chinesen teilen zu müssen. Es war dennoch wahnsinnig spannend und bautechnisch extrem beeindruckend. Mitten im Palast trafen wir dann noch einen Arbeitskollegen von Sascha aus dem EAM Bereich – ohne Worte. Wir flüchteten danach vor der Hitze und den Massen in eine wunderschöne Shopping Mall und machten auf dem Weg dorthin kurz Bekanntschaft mit einer Protestkundgebung (alles friedlich). Janis und Neyla durften am Nachmittag an einer Geburtstagsfeier im Wohngebiet von Shiva teilnehmen und genossen bei den hohen Temperaturen die Bademöglichkeiten. Das Anfreunden mit den 3 Söhnen von XX dauerte wie zu erwarten nicht sehr lange und mit den i Geräten war sehr schnell ein gemeinsamer Nenner gefunden. Den wunderschönen Abend genossen wir dann noch in herrlichem Ambiente auf der Terrasse des Mandarin Oriental. Als Nachtisch gab es für die Kids noch eine kurze Bootsfahrt; kein Wunder also, dass Janis und Neyla nach einem spannenden Tag bereits im Taxi ins Reich der Träume vorgestossen waren.

As expected, Neyla was the first one this morning to wake up and she was ready to explore the hotel at 3am! She did fall asleep again several times for a few minutes but at 5:30 am, when Janis had also woken up, the night was definitely over for us... Luckily the Infinity Pool of the hotel opens at 6am, so we were not only the first ones but also the only ones up there to enjoy the rising sun. By the way, the pool is not any inferior to the Marina Bay Sands. Thanks to our new possibility to make family pictures with our tripod, which really also inspired the kids, we managed to make some pictures all together. The kids got really into it, and especially the fact, that Sascha had to jump into the water to make sure he got on the picture as well, made them laugh like crazy. Sometimes it worked out, sometimes a little less... The breakfast in the hotel afterwards was the top of the top! You can find everything here, Chinese noodle soup, Dim Sum, fresh fruit and lots more. We all made use of it. Now we were ready for the city. Luckily we had the perfect guide here. Shiva Farhadi who has been living here for more than 3 years, took us to the relevant places we wanted to see. Especially in the political situation here right now, we were really thankful to have her by our side. Our first target was the Grand Palace, the former domicile of the kings. This area consist over 100 buildings and stretches out over 2,6qkm. We had two major problems there: the heat and its humidity and the immense crowd of people. After all that time in New Zealand it was a real culture shock to share this place with hundreds of guided Chinese groups. But it was very impressing and exciting anyway. Especially the building techniques were pretty impressive. In the middle of that crowd we met a working colleague of Saschas’ department. No comment. We escaped from the weather straight into a beautiful shopping mall and got witnesses of protest rally on the way there, but everything very peaceful. Going back home, Janis and Neyla had the chance to take part in a birthday party which took place in Shiva’s residential area and they really enjoyed the pool in the hot weather. As expected, they got close with Shiva’s three son’s Jubin, Bijan and Shayan very quickly and the i-equipment gave them all quickly a common denominator. We then had a wonderful evening and dinner together in the Mandarin Oriental and enjoyed a nice little boat ride afterwards. It is not really surprising the kids fell asleep in the taxi on the way to our hotel.
